The technology and competition law intersection - Google's record fine
The intersection between technological developments and competition law continues unabated in the Information Age. The European Commission has recently imposed a record €3.8 billion fine for Google’s breach of competition law in its anticompetitive practices regarding its operating system. Such practices included requirements on phone makers such as Samsung to pre-install numerous Google apps such as search, Maps and Chrome etc.
The antitrust penalty is the largest ever and exceeds the €2.1 billion fine imposed on Google for its Google Shopping service. EU Competition Commissioner remarked:“[the illegal restrictions] cemented the dominance of its search engine. Denying rivals a chance to innovate and compete on the merits.”
