Native title recognition for Kaurna people in Adelaide region
The recent recognition on 21 March 2018 of native title to the Kaurna people for lands around the Adelaide area is significant in many respects. The claim was first made eighteen years ago and is the first positive determination in relation to an Australian capital city. The consent determination confers native title over 17 parcels of land from Lower Light to Myponga and the Adelaide foothills to the Adelaide coastline.
The Kaurna determination is the thirty-first native title agreement to be resolved in South Australia. Twenty current native title applications remain to be dealt with in South Australia. Proposals for developments or activities where native title exists will need to comply with the Native Title Act 1993 (Cth), the Native Title (South Australia) Act 1994 (SA) and any applicable indigenous land use agreement (ILUA) to be finalised with the South Australian Government.
